How Our Accelerated BSN Track Works
The UIW ABSN was designed specifically for students with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree or at least 60 non-nursing college credits, making it possible to graduate ready to sit for the NCLEX in as few as 16 months. Additionally, with three starts each year and seats available now, you may be able to start your journey toward becoming a registered nurse much sooner than with other programs.
As a UIW accelerated nursing student, you’ll become immersed in both the art and science of nursing through a blend of:
- Online coursework that allows you to learn the concepts and theories fundamental to nursing when and where it’s convenient for you.
- Hands-on skills and simulation labs, where you’ll hone your nursing skills, become familiar with advanced healthcare equipment and develop sound clinical judgment.
- Clinical rotations at a variety of San Antonio-area healthcare facilities, giving you real-life experience under the guidance of knowledgeable clinical instructors.
Keep in mind that this accelerated format, while flexible, is not an easy journey. Earning a BSN in as few as 16 months takes a great deal of hard work and dedication, which is why we recommend students treat our accelerated nursing track as a full-time job.

1. Is the UIW Accelerated BSN track accredited?
All of our nursing programs meet applicable state and national accreditation standards, including from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Additionally, UIW is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and the ABSN track is approved by the Texas Board of Nursing.
2. What are the ABSN track admissions requirements?
You must have at least a non-nursing bachelor’s degree or at least 60 non-nursing college credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to meet the admissions requirements for our accelerated track. Moreover, if you haven’t already taken the prerequisite courses, you will need to take them to be eligible for admittance. Nursing students are also required to submit to a criminal background check and obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.
3. Do I need to complete the prerequisites before I apply to the ABSN track?
To be admitted into our accelerated nursing track, each of the prerequisite courses must be completed with a minimum GPA of 3.0. These courses provide important background knowledge that you’ll need in nursing school. Keep in mind that you may have already taken some or all of the required prerequisites, depending on your previous degree.
You can apply to the ABSN track while you are finishing the last semester of your prerequisites. UIW can grant conditional acceptance, pending the submission of your official transcript upon completion of your prerequisites.
4. Can I work during the Accelerated BSN track?
While there is no rule against working while enrolled in the UIW ABSN track, it’s not recommended. Nursing school, and especially an accelerated track like ours, requires the time commitment of a full-time job. To succeed, you’ll need to put in a great deal of time, energy and hard work.
5. How much does the ABSN track cost, and is financial aid available for students?
